Description

This dataset contains specimen of Poaceae family held at the Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza. Those are related to specimen collected in Madagascar and the surrounding islands (La Reunion, Mauritius, Seychelles, Comoros, Juan de Nova, Europa Island, Glorioso islands, Mayottes) since 1841 to 2018. The basic data was provided by TAN herbarium. KMCC team have done the georeferencing of the old specimen by using the webs georeferencing tools and the gazetteer of Missouri Botanical Garden (MBG) and KMCC. This publication is linked to the BID grasses project (BID-AF2017-0103-SMA) which is funded by GBIF through the European Union funding.

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 5,146 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Versions

The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data

Images of herbarium specimens were sent to Madagascar and full data transcription and georeferencing took place. Data from TAN and Dr Maria Vorontsova’s research were compiled in the grass database. A checklist of the species which are endemic , alien and/or native are extracted from the book by Jean Bosser (1969)

Title Alien, native and endemic grasses of Madagascar
Identifier BID-AF2017-0103-SMA
Funding This project is co-funded by the European Union, GBIF and the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew
Study Area Description Grasses of Madagascar and the surrounding islands (sector AFM)
Design Description The objectives of this project were to digitize all Madagascar and surrounding islands grass specimens from Paris herbarium, making the updated identification of these specimens from Paris and also from the data of TAN herbarium and doing the georeferencing of specimens which are not yet have any coordinates information. Around 14000 data entries with high quality are published on GBIF portal with one checklist of the Madagascar grasses by using the data from Bosser researches. These data are published via the MadBIF IPT and an atlas of Madagascar grasses will be provided.

Sampling Methods

No Description available

Quality Control To ensure that the data to be transferred to GBIF portal has a high quality, the database manager has done weekly a double check of data quality from the database officers. The checked data were cleaned and standardised in a BRAHMS database.

Method step description:

  1. Merging of existing records from TAN herbarium in the Poaceae database, georeferencing of oldest specimen by using MBG and KMCC gazetteer and the webs georeferencing tools, updating of the scientific name by Dr Maria Vorontsova (Grass specialist), cleaning data, publishing
