Description
The BRYOTAN collection is part of a bigger collection held by TAN Herbarium at the Flora Department of the Botanical and Zoological Garden of Tsimbazaza (PBZT). This Herbarium, as the national reference of flora specimens conserved plant specimens issued from diverse national and/or international projects since 1897. The digitization of this big collection was initiated during SEP-CEPDEC 1. Digitizing the Bryophytes collection was not part of this project. We seized the opportunity of the BID-AF2017-0174-NAC project kindly funded by the European Union through the BID-GBIF program to arrange, to identify, to digitize and to publish our Bryophyta collection data on GBIF portal , to making them universally and freely available . Indeed, Bryophyta were proven to be good indicators of ecosystem health but in Madagascar this plant group is so poorly known.
Data Records
The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,238 records.
This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.
Versions
The table below shows only published versions of the resource that are publicly accessible.

Project Data
The BRYOTAN project aims to answer to the lack of biodiversity data for bryophytes with focus on mosses in Madagascar. These tiny plants, mostly unknown by the public have crucial ecological functions in humid forest (water storage with slow release) and in open, dry ecosystems (first colonizers of naked soils or rocks, humus initiators). Since the end of the nineteen century more than 3000 dry mosses specimen are deposited in the herbarium of Parc Biologique Zoologique de Tsimbazaza, Antananarivo (TAN) and remain mostly unexploited. BRYOTAN project aims to build a database on Malagasy mosses (751 species reported) and to make taxonomic, geographical and temporal specimen data available. First, data from herbarium labels will be gathered and adapted to computerization, including new geolocalization. An identification and training workshop will be organized in Antananarivo, welcoming international specialists and local botanists. This enhance efficient taxonomic data production from herbarium specimen, and training of Malagasy bryologists for future. A website of “Malagasy Bryophytes” will be created. Data will be shared through GBIF portal, more than 3000 entries estimated. Data mobilization will be completed by images acquisition. The project involves three Malagasy partners, with strong skills in herbarium management, computerization, web development and bryology (PBZT, MBG, Mahajanga University).French partner, MNHN is involved for bryophytes systematics. BRYOTAN project will share high quality data to complete or confirm Malagasy bryophytes check-list, to elaborate plan for taking in account bryophytes in conservation and to aware the populations and institutions in charge of biodiversity management about this unknown diversity.
